If I wanted to sell it, I could have probably got four or five thousand dollars for it since it had a nearly brand new engine installed.

And that's what the major charities will do. They'll put in a little money to fix your car up if they think they can raise the value enough to make some decent cash in an auction sale. That's what all charities generally do when you donate a car, they auction it off. Then you get to deduct whatever amount they received when they sold it at auction. They'll report to you that amount as a matter of tax record so you usually don't have to worry about hounding them to tell you the amount they got. Since they are government regulated charities, they have to comply with certain tax reporting laws that make them transparent.
